Tanneke Heersche is an independent consultant who specializes in ESG, Sustainability, and natural resource project development in emerging markets. Tanneke is highly regarded for her expertise and experience in the mining industry, where she is recognized as a leading legal advisor. Her extensive experience includes advising on all aspects of the development and financing of mining and other natural resource projects in emerging markets, with a particular emphasis on African markets. She regularly advises major international mining companies and international financial institutions as well as governments in numerous countries around the world.
Ms. Heersche was a senior partner at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP (2010-2023), focusing on natural resource project development in emerging markets. She was also the head of the firm-wide ESG Steering Committee.
Prior to Fasken, Ms. Heersche was a partner at White & Case LLP, where she was co-chair of the Global Metals & Mining Practice Group and executive managing partner of its Johannesburg office. She had a particular emphasis on project development, investment agreement negotiations, and the integration of ESG into development frameworks.
She was also recognized as one of the ‘Most Highly Regarded Individuals’ within the field of Mining law by the International Who’s Who Legal, praised for being “one of the finest mining lawyers in Africa” (2009-2012 editions), and recognized by Chambers Global as a leading lawyer within the fields of ‘Energy & Natural Resources: Mining’ (South Africa) and ‘Projects & Energy’ (Africa) in 2013. She is also noted as a Canadian’ Experts Based Abroad’ and a South African ‘Foreign Expert’ within the field of ‘Energy & Natural Resources: Mining.’
Ms. Heersche holds an LLB from the University of Toronto and a BSc (Physiology) and BA (German Literature) from Western University.
