Phillip Von Wielligh

Philip Von Wielligh has spent over 30 years in the South African Mining industry, much of it working on the leading edge of the Industry’s Corporate Social Responsibility practices.

Working with Placer Dome, Barrick, and Western Areas Gold Mining Company, he was a design and implementation leader in the development of the industry’s HIV/AIDS programming in the early 2000s. Furthermore, to develop practices to reduce the adverse effects of HIV /AIDS on productivity.

He led the industry’s transition to a more development-focused approach to mitigate the impacts of industry retrenchment and downsizing on the mining companies, employees, and their families. He was an instrumental force in creating and operating TEBA Development, the South African mining industry’s development arm.

He was a key leader in the South/South technology transfer project that helped to transform HIV/AIDS programming in Papua New Guinea.

His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the World Bank’s Development Innovation Award, the Nexen Award for Corporate Social and Ethical Responsibility in Canada, and the Star of Africa Award for community development.

His work was featured in a Stanford Business School case study.

He presented papers at various International Seminars across the world on “The impact of HIV on productivity and Business,” which includes the World Bank in Washington, the United Nations Global Mining Dialogue in Geneva, Switzerland, Sustainable Conferences in Brisbane, Australia, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Ottawa Canada, AIDS Symposium at the University of California in Los Angeles, HIVAIDS Conferences in Papua New Guinea, McGill University, among others.
