Dr. Mark Thorpe is a senior mining executive and board member with more than 30 years of experience in team building, development, and leadership, facilitating innovative change for mutual benefit in the extractive industries. His experience spans five continents and over 40 countries, covering mining from greenfield exploration to closure and post-closure Management.
Dr. Thorpe has worked in mining operations and as an international corporate responsibility consultant on mining projects from potash to diamonds and gold.
With expertise in corporate external affairs, project evaluations and Management, oversight of general operations with stakeholder engagement, corporate responsibility, environmental and community management, human rights, anti-corruption, and more, Dr. Thorpe’s many years of expertise have benefitted organizations like INV Metals Inc (2019-2021), Torex Gold Resources Inc (2015-2019), and Golden Star Resources (2006-2015). He currently serves as the VP EHSS for SSR Mining in Denver, Colorado.
Having lived and worked in Latin America and Africa, Dr. Thorpe’s experience includes permitting a mine in a tropical rainforest area of Venezuela with several regulatory changes and working with the project teams to reduce the LTIFR at a mine in Africa from 2.1 per million hours worked to 0.15 per million hours worked.
Dr. Thorpe holds a Ph.D. in mineland rehabilitation from the University of Saskatchewan and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Canada Mining Innovation Council.
